From Cormac McCarthy’s 2006 novel The Road is a post-apocalyptic tale of a father and son journeying south towards the coast of a ravaged America. The unnamed characters travel a desolate, burnt landscape where the sun is obscured by ash and all life is extinct. The man and boy, around 40 and 10 years old respectively, are driven by the hope of finding civilization and warmth on the Gulf Coast before winter.
